Touting their style as “Not
your father’s bluegrass,” the veteran group of bluegrass
musicians that make up Down on 5th don’t hesitate to
disclose their aim: creating progressive bluegrass music,
utilizing traditional elements of the form and pushing
forward with a unique sound all their own.
The group features Joe Larson
on banjo, bassist Kelsie Westfall on bass, guitarist Marke
Richardson, and mandolin player Dennis Haycraft. With an
innovative approach to harmonizing vocals and re-arranging
everything from classic bluegrass tunes like “Down the Road”
to the Impressions’ soulful song “People Get Ready,” the
group’s
talents move beyond form
and into the realm of experienced imagination. As the group
mentions, “This is bluegrass to the extreme.”
